Porto’s Modern Architecture

Day 01: Arrival day

Arrival Porto mid afternoon. Private transfer to your hotel, followed by a panoramic tour of Porto – nights views of Porto.

Stop for a Port and Tonic over one of the best views over the city. Dinner in traditional restaurant and welcome lecture about Porto’s modern architecture history. Transfer back to the hotel.

Day 02: History and 19th Century

AM – Tour with a history scholar: visit the main monuments of Porto that show the history of the city’s archictecture: The Cathedral and the Church of S. Francisco as well as the Clerigos Tower, the popular Ribeira are some exemples.

From the 19th century and as an exemple of the importance the city achieved we have to point out the D. Maria Bridge by Eiffel, the Alfandega Building, the S. Bento Train Station, the Stock Exchange Palace, the Majestic Café.

Porto’s architecture is quite carachetristic, with its narrow buildings in dark granite blocks and glaze titles.

Lunch and rest of the day free

Some options for your afternoon:

  • visit of an archictectural practice.
  • private visit to House and Museum of Serralves.
  • Private visit to Casa da Musica

Diner in the area of Miguel Bombarda Street, where art and night life meet.

Day 03: On the path of Siza Vieira and Souto Moura

Tour with an architect.

Porto is home of 2 Pritzker prizes: Siza Vieira and Souto Moura. But there were others that preceded them and made possible for them to grow.

This morning is dedicated to those that didn’t had the same international oportunities but still did an amazing job.

In the afternoon we will visit mostly Matosinhos, the town of Siza Vieira, and we will see how the work of Siza and Souto Moura have a strong relation.

We propose late dinner at one the traditional Cafés of Porto for a steak and a beer.

Day 04: Contemporary Architecture

Architecture tour with an architect.

One of Eduardo Souto Moura’s most impressive work is in the city of Braga (55 klms north of Porto) – the football stadium.

Also the MIEC museum, in a small town on the way deservs to be visited.

After a delicious traditional lunch in the city of Braga, time to visit some interesting works related with urban regeneration.

Day 05: Day at leisure

Free day to Experience the city by yourselves.

For those who are interested in learning some more, we can organize a visit with the theme of Modern Architecture on the years 30 to 40’s.

Cross the iron bridge to the other side for fantastic views over the city and for a visit of a Port Wine Lodge.

At sunset we will take you on a cruise by the river, for fantastic views and shots of Porto.

Day 06: Back home.

Private transfer out.
